Session 1 – The Evolution of Corporate Constitutional Rights
Students will evaluate American history from a critical perspective of our government’s role in maintaining a balance between protecting individual rights and the common good. Students will review key U.S. Supreme Court rulings that created and expanded corporate rights and power from the mid-1800s to the present day. Students discuss the effect of these rulings on the Founders’ intended form of sovereign self-governance – a democratic Republic.

Session 2 – Empowering Youth as Change Agents
Students will explore and articulate what they value, leading to a consideration of how a functioning democracy is critical for protecting their values and weaving them into the fabric of society. Students will analyze and discuss the basic elements of successful action plans created and implemented by their peers from around the country. This lesson highlights the role youth can play in creating a more sustainable and democratic society that reflects human rights and values.
